What do you call a school with no tests,no letter grades,no required classes and no teachers?Students of the Met school and their
parents call it the best school in the world.
Dennis Littky,a double PhD in psychology and education set up the Met school in Rhode island in 1996.The school agreed to accept
poor kids who were failing out of the regular school system.
Everybody had already given up on these students.
"The word most kids use when they talk about high school is
'boring'",says Littky,"what a shame."But no one would describe the Met as "boring"."Advisors" rather than teachers,work with small
groups of students.Students spend almost half of their school time working in interships for business,government and other schools.
Instead of tests,students present exhibitions based on their work
outside of school.
Class work focuses on skills,not knowledge.Even though there are
no tests,the school is not easy."It's a lot harder here",says one of
the students,"The teachers give you a lot of attention.They see all
your strong and weak points."
This approach has had remarkbale results:Ninety-eight percents of
students gradute on time,and 100% graduates are accepted into
university.Bill Gates is now funding a network of similar schools
around the United States.
