Dear Colleagues,

Amber's body language and request offered a lingering lesson about really seeing and responding to the needs of all students.Amber's words continue to resonate in my heart and mind as I often replay and reflect upon this experience with colleagues,teacher interns,and family.
After surviving the questions and requests of many students like Amber,I often meet with the parents and volunteers.These individuals ask questions about the intentions of this new school-university partnership,Is it important to answer the informal questions from parents and volunteers now rather than later?Absolutely!Pausing to listen to and engage in meaningful dialogue with parents and volunteers sends a dual and powerful message of being open,flexible,and caring about each school and the children,while creating lasting connections.The major lesson,or nudge,from each experience is that "People don't care what you know until they know how much you care."
While addressing the present is important,connecting with the futures of college students has an interesting twist and offers several important lessons.Using the college student computer laboratory provides a wonderful and exciting opportunity to listen to and interact with the next generation of professionals.At the same time,the students have a chance to share dreams,ask questions,and confide in a non-peer,the seasoned professional,while taking a needed break from the course assignments due tomorrow or next week.As a seasoned professional,I found this experience served as a reminder to make time to listen to and connect with another generation.The major lesson or nudge from this experience is that giving your undivided attention to another is the best gift to share,as it influences two lives rather than one.
