The programme dictated that dome erection had to start prior to stone cladding the supporting steel ring beam,but this proved to be a problem because the structure could not accommodate the dead load deflection after erection had commenced.
After considering several possible solutions,it was decided to use sprung bearing supports at each of the 42 node positions where the dome connected to the supporting ring beam.These supports allowed the dead load deflection to take place as the stone cladding was erected.When the dome structure was complete,lined and levelled,the supports were then locked-off in position.
The procurement process also dictated that the concrete slab at lower ground level was complete and the steel support structure was in fabrication before the detail design by the specialist subcontractor for the dome was completed.This process subsequently identified that the dome was more structurally rigid than initially anticipated.
The dome is located at the centre of four adjoining buildings which move independently (Figure 10).Various software models were run to simulate the effect of this movement,with the result that in some instances there was uneven distribution of loads through the dome and into supporting columns.The worst possible load scenario was determined and appropriate strengthening work was designed to prevent the steel columns punching through the concrete slab at lower ground level.
