Building re regulations commonly require that two main objectives be met: life safety of the
occupants and structural stability of the building. Two distinctly different design procedures are
applied in each case.

designing for re safety, the purpose of the design is not to simulate accurately all possible res that
could occur in the building. The engineer must rst decide upon how much material can be expected
to burn and how rapidly it will burn, and thus arrive at a design re. The purpose of the design work
is mainly to help the engineer form an opinion of the possible consequences and establish a basis for

early warning devices with regard to allowing means of escape to the occupants.
