could occur in the building. The engineer must rst decide upon how much material can be expected
to burn and how rapidly it will burn, and thus arrive at a design re. The purpose of the design work
is mainly to help the engineer form an opinion of the possible consequences and establish a basis for
appraising the risks due to a building re. The engineer can then compare the effectiveness of different
safety measures; for example, how smoke ventilation through the roof would compare with installing
early warning devices with regard to allowing means of escape to the occupants.
