Membership of international organizations
Succession to membership of international organizations can be proceeded under two different circumstances:the entry of a new state into the organization and the continuation of the membership of the old state to it.In the case of the absorption of the German Democratic Republic by the Federal Republic of Germany the new state was treated as a single member of the United Nations.The former as a state ceased to exist,while the latter continued its international status in terms of rights and obligations designated by treaties and membership to international organizations.Upon the dissolution of the Soviet Union fifteen new states emerged.Russian Federation was accepted as a continuation of the former entity with respect to membership to international organizations including the permanent status in the UN Security Council,while the other fourteen states were treated as successor states and had to apply anew for membership.
