Bianque was a famous physician in ancient China. One day the King of Wei asked him, "You and your two brothers are all skilled in medicine, which of you is the best?"

Bianque answered, "My eldest brother is the best, the next is my second brother , and the last is me."

The King asked again, "Then how is it that you are the most famous?"

Bianque replied, "My eldest brother treats a disease when it is just beginning to show symptoms. What he does is to remove the pathogen--members of my family can all see that but other people cannot. That's why he doesn't enjoy wide recognition. My second brother cures a disease in its early stages. People thus mistake him as only capable of treating minor illnesses. So he is merely known within this locality and its neighborhood. As for me, I treat a disease when it is already well developed and very serious. People observe me perform bloodletting by injecting tubes into vessels or applying medical ointment on the skin, and thus look upon me as well versed in medicine. So I have become well known all over the country."

The King was quite satisfied and said, "You've given a cogent explanation."

What we can learn from the story is this: Prevention is better than control, which in turn is better than remedy after the event. It's a pity that many enterprise managers fail to see this and try to seek remedies after wrong decisions have incurred great losses, which, they will find, may be too late to make up for.

There was once a farmer who had a fine olive(橄榄树) orchard(果园) . He was very hardworking, and the farm always prospered under his care. But he knew that his three sons despised(轻视,看不起) the farm work, and were eager to make wealth, trough adventure.
When the farmer was old, and felt that his time had come to die, he called the three sons to him and said, "My sons, there is a pot of gold hidden in the olive orchard. Dig for it, if you wish it."
The sons tried to get him to tell them in what part of the orchard the gold was hidden; but he would tell them nothing more.
After the farmer was dead, the sons went to work to find the pot of gold; since they did not know where the hiding-place was, they agreed to begin in a line, at one end of the orchard, and to dig until one of them should find the money.
They dug until they had turned up the soil from one end of the orchard to the other, round the tree-roots and between them. But no pot of gold was to be found. It seemed as if someone must have stolen it, or as if the farmer had been wandering(漫游,闲逛) in his wits. The three sons were bitterly disappointed to have all their work for nothing.
The next olive season, the olive trees in the orchard bore more fruit than they had ever given; when it was sold, it gave the sons a whole pot of gold.
And when they saw how much money had come from the orchard, they suddenly understood what the wise father had meant when he said, "There is gold hidden in the orchard. Dig for it, if you wish it."
Towards the end of the Age of Bronze the human world became very cruel.
Men grew hungry, impolite and ungodly(邪恶的) . Neither right nor law was respected any longer, and the rule of hospitality was forgotten. Dressed up in human form, Zeus visited Arcadia and Thessaly, and disliked the deadly wrongs of men. He decided to clear the earth of them all. Without hesitation he released the rainy south wind and called upon the heartless Poseidon to help. Soon the whole world sank in a vast ocean, and the entire humanrace disappeared in the unheard of(前所未闻的) flood, all but two poor Thessalians.
These were an old childless couple, kind and faithful and contented with life. The man was called Deucalion and his wife Pyrrha. Son of Prometheus, Deucalion had been warned beforehand by his father of the coming flood.
He made himself a huge chest. When the roaring flood came the couple hid themselves in it and floated for nine days until it touched land again on Mt Parnassus.
The once active world presented a frightening sight. It was all death and ruin. Feeling lonely and unsafe, the old couple prayed to the gods for help. A sage(圣人) instructed them to cast the bones of their mother about. The son of the wise Titan, having guessed the true meaning of the mysterious command, started throwing stones behind him.
A miracle occurred. The stones that the man cast became men, the stones that the woman threwturned into women. Since then, people appeared on the land again. The Heroic Age had begun.
