Red pandas,which look like raccoons（浣熊）,are about 42 inches long,including a long,bushy（多毛的）tail.Their soft,dense（浓厚的）reddish-brown fur covers their entire body----even the soles（脚底）of their feet.Red pandas use their long,bushy tails to balance when they're in trees.They also cover themselves with their tails in winter.
Red pandas live in the cool temperate bamboo forests in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces in China,in the Himalayas,and in Myanmar.They share part of their tange（领地）with giant pandas.
Red pandas primarily（主要地）eat bamboo leaves.They also feast on（尽情享用）nuts,berries,insects and smaller animals such as birds.Their broad teeth and strong jaws allow them to chew bamboo's tough leaves and stalks.Like giant pandas,red pandas have a false thumb,a bone on the inside of the wrist,which helps them to hold onto the bamboo while eating it.
Red pandas usually spend the hotter daytime snoozing（打盹儿,瞌睡）in the trees.When the air gets a little cooler in the afternoon and early evening,it is the red panda looks for food and jumps around in the tree tops.
Adult red pandas are solitary（独居的）animals.After a gestation（孕育期）period of around 5 months,the female red panda will give birth to between one and four red panda babies.Red panda babies stay in the nest for about 90 days,remain close to their mother until the next mating season begins,and reach adult size at about 12 months.
