Is English the Ticket to Success and Wealth?
On a sunny day,there was a little man walking on a meadow.He stopped under a row of bricks,which was hanging horizontally in the air without any support.He hopped very hard against the bricks and a beautiful mushroom grew out of the bricks.He jumped onto the bricks and ate the mushroom.Amazingly he immediately grew twice as big as he was.Now he could jump even higher than before and can shoot fireballs whenever he met an enemy.He continued his journey,leaping over high walls,deep gaps and fighting against all kinds of malicious animals along his way.Whenever he was able to pick up a hidden mushroom,he grew even more powerful.
Sometimes he was not swift enough and was killed by his enemies or fell into a deep gap.He started the journey again,but in his previous smaller,less powerful shape.He made another mistake and got killed again.This time,he had to start his journey all over again as that little man.He learned his lessons and became swifter,persistently seeking mushrooms and moving on.After several endeavors,he finally managed to enter into the mysterious castle and continued his journey which would be even more difficult.He decided to move on as he knew there would be more mushrooms waiting for him to explore…
This is one of the most well-known video games--Super Mario.Is there a mushroom or any kind of magic tool that can directly send Mario to the ultimate destination?No!Otherwise,the game will be no fun.
As players in the real life game,we have to manage our life as if we manage Mario’s.There is no transportation of any kind that we can obtain one single ticket like we buy a ticket to Beijing and reach the destination of success and wealth by sitting idly.We have to fight our way through to success,step by step.We encounter numerous difficulties and we fall down again and again.We sometimes have to start up in a new place just like Mario has to start all over again.It takes some players years and years to go into the next level,and some stop at a certain level,contented.Only a small amount of skillful players can go really far.Successful players are good at exploring helpful tools hidden somewhere,just like the magic mushrooms in the bricks!
English,as a most widely-used business language,is one of such mushrooms.Proficiency in English helps us to find a job,helps us to be noticed and promoted,helps us to understand and learn from the outside world…It has numerous kinds of magic power.Whenever we are upgraded into a higher level of career life,we will have to deal with tougher challenges and we will need to improve knowledge and skills just like Mario needs more mushrooms.Some of us started by being able to talk and write in simple English and later we have to give presentations in English and write business reports in English.
However,English is by no means a ticket that guarantees us to success and wealth as success is only achievable with a combination of many qualities and qualifications.Mario,even with the additional power from the mushrooms,still relies largely on being very smart,skillful,courageous and persistent to be able to move on.
There are many successful and wealthy Chinese people that cannot speak good English,just like sometimes Mario in his original little shape can successfully reach the second level or even higher levels without the magic help of mushrooms.However,unlike the bigger Mario who has one more chance to relive after being killed,small Mario needs to be much smarter and quicker to survive and complete the journey.We can only say that these successful people can most probably be even more successful if they speak and write good English,as they will have more direct access to other business opportunities in this global market.
The good news is that with more and more resources available nowadays,the “English mushrooms”,as well as other kinds of mushrooms such as “computer skill”,are much more easily found than before.The way to success is still tough,if not tougher.However,at least we don’t have to knock ourselves very hard against the bricks to find them.
On another sunny day in 2008,Super Mario comes to a meadow.Wow,he finds himself surrounded by thousands of mushrooms!
He is in trouble:
“Do I eat them all?
No,I am not here to eat mushrooms.I am not in a video mushroom-eating competition.
I need to pick out the most nutritious ones and move on…
