1.the gangsters would quickly put a man out of business by destroying his shop.这句中destroying 是什么词性,是现在分词?为什么要用ing形式呢?
2.people would rather pay large sums of money than have their life work destroyed by gangsters.这句中than 后面没明白,have 为什么放这儿,倒装句?那么正过来怎么说呢?而且好象destroyed 应该是被动吧?没看见be动词.
3.gave him a state funeral and had a picture painted which was ...这句里的had a picture painted是固定用法么?

此句中的destroying是动名词(并非现在分词),因为by是介词,介词后面的动词应该用动名词(ing)形式,因为原本介词应与名词组成介宾短语从而在句子中充当成份的,因此在介词后面用到动词的时候就要用动名词或者其相应的名词.
这里by destroying his shop作方式状语.

have sth done.是“让……被”的意思,这里就是让他们的工作生活被歹徒毁掉,因为sth(their life work)与do(destroy)是被动关系,所以用过去分词destroyed,另外by sb表示“被某人”,也表示这里的被动关系
3>had a picture paint也是二句中的用法,是“让一幅画被画”,也就是找人画一个幅的意思
