When I got back my hotel room at 7:30 last
night there was a notice that a Mr.Frank Smith had
telephoned at three o'clock in the afternoon and that
the message told Mr.Smith would appreciate my
answering to the call as soon as I came in.I had no
idea that who he was or what he wanted,but I
thought I'd better telephone him.I noticed that
there was no telephone operator would take an
important message as this without writing the
telephone number.

第1行 got back my hotel room 改成 got back to my hotel room
（get to ..表示到达,漏了介词）
第2行 最后had 改成 去掉
（后面有很具体表示过去时间的词 at three o'clock in the afternoon,不应用过去完成时,而是用一般过去时即可）
第3行 最后that 改成 去掉
（下面接the message told,也就是说后面并非notice的内容,不要用that连接,直接就the message told另起一个句子即可）
第4行 told 改成 said
（say后面是说话的内容,tell一般是告诉某人,但后面没有宾语,只有说话的内容,所以应该用said）
第5行 to 改成 去掉
（回电话,answer the phone不用说answer to the phone,answer是及物动词,可以直接跟宾语）
第6行 that 改成 去年
（关系连词后面已用,who/what,不要再重复使用）
第7行 无
第8行 operator would 改成 operator (who) would 加个who
（需要用从句,否则会出现两个谓语,前面是there was,后面是would take,所以将后面改成从句形式,通过添加一个who,改成定语从句）
第9行 as this 改成 like this
