这里的 explanation for why里,why可不可以改成which
用 for why , 和 for which 差别是什么?

不可以.
原句使用for why...,是用一个介词短语（介词for + 宾语从句why...）做后置定语,修饰前面的explanation.
如果改成for which,则只能理解为定语从句,这样which代指的是先行词explanation.但是将explanation代入定语从句的话,则句意不通.
因为此定语从句中for后面加的应该是表示原因的成分,而explanation不可能充当此句的原因.
即不能说成：there should be such a dramatic cessation of tree growth at the upper timberline (for ...explanation).
