MY DAUGHTER SMOKE
My daughter smokes.I feel terrible.I want to weep.She doesn’t know that my father,her grandfather,also smoked.
I do not remember when he started to cough.By the time I was my daughter’s age,he could not climb stairs without resting every third or fourth step.It was not unusual for him to cough for an hour.He died from “the poor man’s friend”,pneumonia,one hard winter.
When I travel to the Third World countries,I see many people like my father and daughter.Money that should be spent for food goes instead to the tobacco companies.
I read in the newspaper that if a baby swallows a cigarette butt,it is likely to die.As a child I sat by,through the years,and actually watched my father kill himself.Now there is a deep hurt that I feel as a mother.I remember how carefully I ate when I was pregnant,how patiently I taught my daughter how to cross a street safely.But now I have to watch helplessly her self-poisoning.Smoking is a form of self-battering; it also batters those who must sit by and helplessly watch.
Peace on the earth begins at home.I believe everything does.I thought of a slogan for people trying to stop smoking:“Every Home a Smoke-free Zone!”
