Born Earl Simmons,DMX began rapping and beatboxing as a teenager.In 1992,twenty-two year old DMX signed a contract with Columbia Records.His first single “Born Loser” didn't receive much notice,and for this reason Columbia opted to let him go.He has since then jumped from label to label.
In 1998,Def Jam Records released DMX's single “Get At Me Dog”.The song became a hit and allowed DMX's debut album “It's Dark and Hell Is Hot” to reach number one in the pop charts.The album itself earned the artist favorable comparisons with legend Tupac Shakur.Later that same year,DMX's sophomore album “Flesh of My Flesh,Blood of My Blood” came out and hit number one,and gave him a hit in the UK (for the track “Slippin'”).
A year later,DMX released “...And Then There Was X”,yet another number one debut.Its single “Party Up” was in the top ten of the R&B charts,and the album spawned two other hits in “What's My Name” and “What These Bitches Want?” “...And Then” is considered to be DMX's most successful album to date.It was followed by 2001's “The Great Depression”,which,while successfully debuting at number one,did not quite reach the hype of his former albums.
Two years later came “Grand Champ”,once more debuting at number one.Supposed to be DMX's final album,it featured the singles “Where the Hood At?” and “Get It On the Floor”.“Grand Champ”,while a bit more successful than its predecessor,was also considered to be “old hat”.It has two versions released:an original version and a “cleaned up” version.The cleaned up version is said to be the most censored DMX album.
In 2006,DMX came out of retirement and released “Year of the Dog...Again”.While it narrowly missed the number one spot in the charts,it still spawned great tracks in “Lord Give Me a Sign” and “We In Here”.Its tracks are supposedly being reworked and re-released.
DMX's seventh studio album,“Soul of a Man” is scheduled to be released in 2007 or 2008.
