Save The Elephants, an international organization aimed at saving elephants, has started a campaign to persuade some farmers in Taita Taveta county, Kenya, to practice bee keeping as a way of preventing elephants from destroying their crops.
Dr Lucy King, the STE officer for Kenya, said the project is aimed at farmers in elephant-suffering areas of Mtito-Andei, Voi, Mwatate and Taveta.
King said: “Use of beehives is a safe and affordable solution to the frequent human-elephant conflict.”
“Elephants are known to be afraid of bees. That means farms with beehives will be safe and the owners are able to get a harvest in addition to getting more money from the sale of honey,” she said. Honeycare Africa, the largest producer of high quality honey in East Africa, will provide the hives and will be buying the honey at a reasonable price from the farmers. One acre of land requires twenty-five beehives.
King said that the project had been tested in Laikipia and Samburu counties with great success. She added that the project would be able to reach thousands of long-suffering farmers from all over the county.
According to Dr King who is an expert in animal behavior, use of beehives will not harm seasonal movements of animals.
She expressed her disquietude with an electric fence. She thought that an electric fence kept all animals in the limited areas, not letting even the harmless ones move freely.
“Unlike electric fences, hives will stop the elephants from going into people’s farms but will not stop them from moving around. All other animals are also free to move around,” she said.
Dan Mghenyi, a farmer from Voi admitted that all other efforts to keep the elephants away from farms had been unsuccessful.
“We have tried almost everything but the elephants keep coming. Hives are easy to set up and are affordable to most farmers. This is something that actually works,” he said.
Farmers in the county have in the past lost crops worth millions of shillings and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has taken a lot of criticism over the failure to control movements of the wild animals.
