From early forms such as email and BBS to today’s mature social platforms such as FaceBook,Renren,

of individual nodes in information release.Studies in this field involve comparative study,
characteristics of SNS,and the competitive and cooperative relationships between SNS and traditional
network media.This paper analyzes the influence of SNS on social conflicts and discusses the positive
role of SNS in buffering network group polarization and the increasing influence of network public
opinions on social conflicts with significant reduction of information transmission cost.Due to
low-quality information,shallow opinions,rumors,superstition,pornography,violent information,
unrestricted reveal of the dark side of society,and emotional vent in network public opinions,SNS can
promotes social conflicts.In this context,the government and citizens shall promote their network
morality,guide network public opinions reasonably,and achieve the healthy development of SNS
together.

1 Introduction
Social networking service (SNS) mainly refers to creating online communication communities for
a group of like-minded people.This kind of online community usually builds a social circle of certain
range through free real-name registration,and mainly has services like email,instant messaging,and
friends searching.Based on the “six degrees of separation” founded by Stanley Milgram who is a
psychology professor in Harvard University,such sites extend “network human relations” into a
network through friend chain which is very much like leaf veins.In China,it is generally referred to as
“social networking”.SNS often provides various ways for social contact,such as online chat,email,
multimedia,file sharing,blog,and discussion group.SNS provides a more rapid and stable
transmission platform for information transmission,and presents diversified and multiple perspectives
about the development of the world.Among SNSs,FaceBook,My space and Twitter are widely
accepted by the public.In mainland China,popular SNSs include Renren,Kaixin,Microblog and
WeChat.SNS not only brings unprecedented changes to communication,but also subtly affects the
thought of people and social development in various countries with different ideologies and even
causes certain social conflicts.
