Doggie bags and brown bag restaurants
In America everything is very “big”,and portions in a restaurant are also often very generous. If customers don’t finish the food, they will call the waiter to the table and politely ask for a doggie bag. After all,it has been paid for,so it’s better to take it home than waste it.
It seems that the food will be given to the customer’s pet.It really doesn’t enjoy the food.In fact, food in the doggie bag is never really meant to be given to man’s best friend in the first place. It will most probably be eaten by the pet’s owner.
The food might become part of next regular meal. When the waiter returns with the check,he will also give the customer a doggie bag. Some restaurants even have heavy-duty paper bags with a picture of a puppy on the side.
A “brown bag restaurant”,however,is something quite different. In America, some restaurants are not allowed to sell liquor because they don’t have a license to do so.However, customers can bring in their own liquor in a brown paper bag.The waiter only gives the guests the bottle opener after the meal has been ordered.
This custom of bringing liquor by oneself is attractive for both the customer and the restaurant. The customer likes it because he can enjoy his meal with liquor. The owner of the restaurant is happy because he has more customers.
Kids are going all over the world without ever leaving their school. They are using their computers.A school in California could be the most wired school in America. They are wired to the Internet through their computers.
All the students are able to use the Internet every day.The teacher says that it is hard to get them away from the computers. They do not even want to go for a rest when they are using it.
The Internet has opened the world to students. Now they can go to any library in America. They can get so much information. They can visit a child in another country.Laura Bacon likes to visit other students on the Internet. She’s going to Peggy’s page.Peggy is a school student in London,England. She puts her own home page on the Internet. It includes pictures of her school, her mom,her dad and friends.
A scientist helped to wire the school. He says,“There is a plan to connect 12 thousand Californian schools to the Internet.”
Wiring schools in California has cost a lot of money. Some people say that the money should be spent on teachers instead of computers. Some people say that it would be worth it to wire all of the classrooms.
