When some sixth-grade pupils from Sekolah Kebangsaan Raub Jaya were told to stay back after class, they looked unhappy as they were more interested in joining their friends at the school’s field.
After the 50 pupils made their way into the classroon,a teacher told them that they would join a two-hour New Straits Times Niexus workshop. The children were rewarded with a session filled with games and laughter. The 12-year-olds quickly got over their shyness and joined in various activities, including a language game which required them to fill in the blanks with alphabets based on various themes.
When the workshop ended, the pupils were not willing to leave their seats and wanted to continue. Before returning home, the pupils each received a copy of the New Straits Times and were advised to use the newspaper during English classes.
Amiratul Khalisa Ahmad Izhar said,“Most of us thought English was difficult but after this session,I realized it was interesting. The games on the Niexus website will surely help me improve my English.”As for Aidil Rosmeli,he never thought that the New Straits Times could be used as a learning tool as he felt the newspaper was for adults.“It actually contains a lot of interesting facts while the Niexus website is a must visit site for pupils,”he said, adding that more workshops should be organized.S.Manimaran said,“At first,I was not willing to join as I thought it was an extra English class.”
The“Mesra Kasih Empower”program was organized for English teavhers and pupils at the school by the East Coast Economic Region Development Council with the cooperation of the Malaysia Social Development Organization and New Straits Times.
