New Earth,but same old problems
I can just hear the sales pitch:"The earth getting too crowded?your summer home flooded because of global warming? How about moving to the other earth?It's only 20 light years away'
No,this isn't an ad for another virtual reality computer game.This second earth is real.It's a new planetary discovery.Astronomers say that among the known planets outside our solar system,Gliese581C(its formal name)is the most similar to the earth.
There are still a lot of question to be answered about it The claims being made by a team from the European southern Observatory have to be verified.But I have to tell you,Second Earth is sounding pretty good to me right now.It's uncharted terriory,fullof mystery and the potenital for adventure.
Imagine a planet 1.5 times bigger than the earth,where the average ground temperature is ”comfotable for life”'water is available,and a year is only13 Earth days.
Pack my bags!I'ready to leave-I think.
A few words of cauion,though.we have treated this earth badly. Would the possibility of escaping to a second one,however remote,mean we'll treat her even worse?Would we,in the end,attempt to discard her a used tissue?
Would we,if given the chance,do it all over again?Or would we learn from our mistakes this first round?
Would we realize the need for careful planning to incliude everthing from equitable land distribution to clearly stated and enforced rules to protect the environmen?
What mechanism would be used to decide if,where and how much land individuals,corporation and countries would get?Who would poorer people,or would they simply be left here to battle with the smog and the hole in the ozone layer.
I've decided not to pack my bag just yet.
The key,I believe it right here on the earth first.We need to be just.fair,our brother's keeper,and have respect for nature.
Let's fact it,what good would it do to pack my bags just to move to a new home with the same old problems?
