The man in this picture should not be strange to anyone, he is Barack Obama, the first black president of the United States; this goes to show that the social status of Afro-Americans has improved considerably. But until half a century ago, the Negros in the States was still subjected to serious discrimination.(注:这里是指某个族群,所以用was)
For a country that flaunts the banner of equality, Negros’ long term suffering of raw treatment is undoubtedly ironic to the United States. Despite the fact that a great American, President Lincoln had promulgated the Emancipation Proclamation and it seemed that the Negros had greeted the dawn of freedom. But it was not to be, for the subsequent one hundred years, the social status of the Negros was as humble as could be; they suffered endless miseries caused by racial segregation and discrimination, isolated away from the ‘free’ American society. As far as the Negros is concerned, the civil rights movement has been going on persistently.
The goal of this demonstration rally is as clear as a bell; it is to demand the U.S. government to fulfill the pledge it had made: All men would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If the pledge is not fulfilled, the Negro people will carry on the struggle until they prevail. The objective of bringing up history again is to express discontent to the government on the one hand, and on the other, it is to declare publicly that we are not making trouble out of nothing, our struggle is legitimate.
Martin Luther King had stressed that Negro people must use nonviolent means to fight for equal treatment, behave properly and observe strict discipline, at the same time, they must trust the whites and join forces with them. He believed that the bank of justice will never be bankrupt.
Who is the great American?
Parallelism sentences were used in the article to reveal the present living conditions of Negros. So, after a hundred years, what is the situation of the Negros?
How to realize the dream? Nonviolent, observe strict discipline, trust the whites and join forces with them.
