equimolar (1 :1 or 1 :2) mixture of bisulfates of these alkaloids
is the parent substance of the drug sanguiritrine developed
in the middle 1970s at the All-Russia Research Institute
of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants [3].This drug exhibits a
broad spectrum of antimicrobial action,as well as immunomodulating
and anticholinesterase activity [4].
In Russia,a source of raw materials for the production of
sanguiritrine is the grass of introduced east-asian species of
Macleaya R.Br.genus,in particular,M.cordata (Willd) R.
Br.and M.microcarpa (Maxim.) Fedde (Pharmacopoeial Article
VFS 42-2666–89).Analogous foreign preparations include
sanchelin (Czech Republic),prepared from the grass of
Chelidonium majus L.,and sanguinarine hydrochloride (USA)
obtained from the roots of Sanguinaria canadensis L.[2].
