楼上说错了,此处second是形容词,用来直接修饰主语,或者说是名词性成分,而was在此处不能称作谓语动词,应该是系动词.
还有一点,first和second无论什么时候都是序数词,序数词和形容词名词这些不一样,序数词是相对于基数词而言的,如first（第一）相对于one（一）；而形容词名词则是指一个词的词性!
其实说“He was first in the queue”也没错,此时的first和second一样就是作形容词用,若用“the first”则是“the first one”省略了one.
