关汉卿十分同情底层人民，尤其是身处于社会底层的普通女性，也因此创作出许多反映女性生活与命运的戏剧作品。他常常把地位低下的女性作为主角，歌颂她们坚强不屈、勇于同封建制度作斗争，不屈服于可悲命运的反抗精神。其笔下的女性形象身份地位不同，生活境遇也各有差异，构建了一幅由众多性格迥异的平民女子组成的人物画廊。在剧中，她们或感天动地，或机智聪明，或坚持不懈……创造了一个又一个奇女子形象。本文即以关汉卿笔下的女性形象为研究对象，主要对这些女性形象的性格进行分析，挖掘这些人物形象之间的共性特征和个性差异，总结出元代女性的特点。
论文共分为五个章节：绪论部分主要介绍研究的目的与意义；第一章介绍的是关汉卿的生平与创作概况；第二章则对关汉卿笔下的女性群像进行分类，根据人物身份划分为孀居寡妇形象、风尘女子形象、大家闺秀形象、老年妇女形象等四类，并在分类的基础上具体分析她们的形象意义；第三章主要阐述了关汉卿笔下女性形象的性格特点，如为人正直善良、勇于追求爱情与幸福、反抗封建礼教等；第四章主要指出了关汉卿在塑造女性形象时，所取得的文学成就与不足；最后是结语，总结概括了全文内容。通过研究，本文认为：作者关汉卿由于长期生活在社会底层，因此十分熟悉被侮辱、被损害的广大妇女的生活状况，并对她们的悲惨命运深表同情。他笔下的女性形象既保有中华妇女的传统美德，又有着强烈的反抗斗争精神，在她们身上寄托了作家艺术的审美理想和生活的美好愿望。
