There were as many as 100,000 of these giant animals swimming in the oceans,now there might be only a small number of this kind of animal.And with the females only giving birth to only one young calf every two to three years and a gestation (怀孕) period of 11 months,this doesn’t help work out the problem.Though it is not allowed to hunt the blue whale,the World Conservation Union still considers the species to be on the edge of dying out.
With a length of about 30 meters,the blue whale is the world’s largest animal.A full-grown whale is as heavy as 30 big elephants.This animal can also live up to 100 years.
Global warming and oil spilling are doing nothing to help the blue whale’s survival.On the contrary,this may stop the whale from coming to the surface.And with oil on the surface,their skin gets covered in oil and can block their blowholes (呼吸孔).
Krill (磷虾) need food and they are very important to the Antarctic food chain.With global warming krill become less than before.It will cause a fall in the whale population.The blue whale,even with its large,strong,muscular body,can be killed if hit by a steam boat.Also the nets fishermen use can tangle (缠住) with these whales.
These problems aren’t only for the blue whale,and they are also meant for all the whales which are in danger.
