（一）字,是人体生命的对应
苏轼在《唐氏六人书后》中曾以拟人的描述来评论书法“真如立,行如行,草如走”.楷书像人“站立”,行书像人“走”,草书则像人“跑”.他在《论书》中更进一步用人体构成五要素来比喻书法的构成和书法的五要素,他说：“书必有神、气、骨、肉、血,五者阙一,不为成书也.”这不能不说是对“字如其人”理论的一种创见.
清人王澍又给苏轼补充了三项内容,他说：“作字如人然”.怎么如人呢?“筋、骨、血、肉、精、神、气、脉,八者备而后可为人”.可以把这八个字作这样理解,字的筋、骨、血、肉,体现作者的基本功力；字的精、神、气、脉则反映作者的修养素质.
（二）字,是书者志向的外化
字,就是书写人的意志、情趣、追求.清刘熙载在《艺概》中指出：“写字者,写志也.”他并举出张旭教诲颜真卿的一句话：“非志士高人,讵可与言要妙?”非有远大志向、高尚情怀,书法怎么可能做到精妙呢?
其实,好的书法都有深刻的含义,可以从中看出作者的思想和情趣,而且往往能一目了然.唐张怀在《书艺》中说的很清楚：“夫翰墨及文章至妙者,皆有深意以见其志,览之即了然.”只要认真观察,从好的书法作品和文章中,都可以很明白地看出作者的思想、志趣.

一是人品高,书品自然高雅.清杨守敬说：“品高则下笔妍雅.”品格高尚的人,书法肯定脱俗.
二是品德清纯,书法就潇洒.李白有一首诗叫《王右军》,其中有这样两句：“右军本清真,潇洒出风尘.”赵孟又把它加以演绎,成了下面两句：“右军潇洒本清真,落笔奔腾势入神.”都是一个意思,首先称赞王羲之品德清纯,风韵潇洒；接着赞扬他的书作如他的人品,清秀超逸,气势奔放,精妙绝伦.从这里可以看出,王羲之的书品和他的人品的高度统一.
旧时的读书人,写字是人生的第一门功课.乡试殿试,字写得差,考官有权将试卷作废.
