诗歌是文学作品中最纯粹的艺术,其语言是韵律的语言,且精练含蓄,节奏分明,句式整齐.诗的生命似乎是世代相传的,其价值观都包藏在诗篇里,所以即便是在最大的压力下,仍会存在,历久不衰.与其他文学体裁相比,诗歌是诗人的思想与文字在作品中完全天然融合的产物,诗歌浓缩了一个民族语言文化的精华,含有鲜明的语言文化特征,因而诗歌的翻译是很有难度的.英国诗人雪莱曾说诗不能翻译,译诗是徒劳的,“犹如把一朵紫罗兰投入坩埚,企图由此探索它的色泽和香味的构造原理”.严复也说,有些文学作品根本不可译,尤其是诗.因为诗歌的内容和形式紧密结合,难以分割.
但是随着时代的发展,两种语言文化交流的增多,诗歌翻译中可译或不可译的因素并不是固定不变的,我们需要外国优秀的诗歌,同时也需要把我国的诗歌译成外文,尽可能的传达原诗的“意美”、“音美”和“形美”,使读诗的异国读者能够从译作中获得尽可能与本国读者一样多的共鸣和美的享受.对诗歌翻译要求这么严格,其翻译标准该如何界定呢?刘重德教授提出汉诗英译的最高境界是形神兼似.
