Muchhas been written about the applicability of systems theory to socialorganizations.The materials available,however,have mainly been written foran audience of behavioral scientists and organization specialists.This isunfortunate,since these pieces are full of jargon that often renders themvirtually valueless to most organization members.It is my belief that systemstheory is most impactful when those who live in the organization understand itwell enough to view and think about their daily lives using a systemsperspective.SYSTEMS THINKING is a label for this ability.
Accordingly,what follows is adiscussion of the basic tenants of Systems Thinking that is addressed to thetypical business reader.While this will cover the key aspects of systemstheory,it will not be an in-depth- treatment (Other reading material,forthose who wish to pursue thesubject further,will be mentioned in the bibliography.) The concepts coveredare meant to allow the reader to see organizations as complex systems and tocreate an awareness of some opportunities to improve effectiveness and somepitfalls to be guarded against.Systems models of organizations are mainlyanalytic vs,prescriptive.
