Introduction to “What will happen if I do this?”
Every action has a consequence or result. Some consequences are serious and some are not.If you don’t do your homework regularly, you’ll fail your studies. That’s serious. If you wake up late, you’ll have to run to school. That’s not so serious (as long as you get to school on time).
Superstitions(n.迷信) are beliefs about serious consequences resulting from actions that are not so serious. Some superstitions have more to do with personal (adj.私人的,个人的) beliefs; for instance,Michael Jordan always wore his blue University of North Carolina shorts under his Chicago Bulls uniform for good luck. However, all cultures have their own superstitions, and most of them are often about luck.
Here are some well-known superstitions from around the world:In Japan, people believe that if you find a white snake, you will be lucky in life. Some Koreans believe that if you hear a magpie (n.鹊),a friend will visit you soon.In the United States,if you break a mirror, you will have seven years of bad luck.In the Philippines,if it rains on their wedding day,the wedding couple will have good luck.In Brazil,if you always put the sugar in the cup before the coffee, you’ll become rich.
