Asked what are the hot topics in Chinese sociology,studies on migration of the rural population would without doubt be the first one on the list.Like a powerful magnet,this field has attracted many experts and scholars and considerable research funds since the beginning of the 1990s.Why do these peasant workers(nongmin gong,usually called for short mingong),a subaltern stratum or marginal class,so to speak, receive this amount and depth of attention? On the theoretical plane,this issue involves changes in the whole social structure. Chinese society with its 5,000-year history of civilization was always predominantly rural,but urban migration is clearly making it predominantly urban.Imagine the tremendous change this means in a nation of 1.3 billion people! It is estimated that rural migrants into urban areas number about 100 million—a figure summing up the impact of the mingong phenomenon.Indeed,Chinese scholars have broken through in their studies the traditional paradigm governing research on rural-urban migration,challenging traditional theoretical models and inquiring into a distinctively Chines e mode of urbanization.Inv iew oft his,we have enlisted a set of papers specifically on the issue of mingong migration into urban areas to show thereby the new progress in the studies in this field by Chinese scholars.
The first two papers are a general survey of the situation.The first is by Professor Tan Shen,a comprehensive summary of documents about recent research in the PRC involving the main aspects of the studies on the mingong in urban areas:the basic theoretical paradigms,household registration system and urbanization,employment and social stratification of mingong,their social networks,communities of urban migrants, motive forces for migration,differentiation among the mingong and gender studies on mingong.The second is Huang Ping’s analyses of the social background of ruralurban migration.His paper informs us regarding the numbers of mingong in the cities,their economic contribution,the gap between town and country,land problem in rural areas,township and village enterprises, dilemma of thec ountryside and new changes there.In Huang’s view,the urbanization and industrialization in China are restricted by a series of historical conditions and will therefore follow neither the European and American road nor that pioneered by Japan and the Republic of Korea,but will open a new road of its own.
