Result and discussion
The results obtained from solvent extraction of nylon
6 subjected to 5 MeV electrons indicated that no
insoluble gel is formed upon irradiation up to dose of
150 kGy.However,melt flow index decreased signifi-
cantly as a function of absorbed dose (Fig.1),suggesting
increase of the melt viscosity of the nylon and
correspondingly its molecular weight.
This result was also supported by molecular weight
measurements.Viscosity average molecular weight,Mv,
was determined by the MarkeHouwink equation [14]:

polymer/solvent/temperature system and h is intrinsic
viscosity.For nylon 6/formic acid/25?C system the
constants a and k are 0.94 and 0.463 10?5l/min,
respectively [13].The molecular weight of the irradiated
nylon 6 increased steadily with increasing absorbed
doses up to 150 kGy (Fig.2),which suggests formation
of chain branching in the nylon samples upon EB-
irradiation.Similar results have been reported on the
gamma-irradiated polyamide 6 for the irradiation dose
of 400 kGy [15].
