1.What is your name of business?
ABC Translation Services
2.What type of business do you do?
Service
3.Where dose your capital come from?
I got a business loan from a bank, and part of them from my parents and friends.
4.What do you sell or what services do you render?
I do translation for people who need my assistance.
5.How do you keep record of:
a) Your purchases?
I don’t need to purchase any products; however,I do have a bookkeeping system to keep track of the services I have provided to my clients.I record my service under a ledger account called “service rendered” and then record the income I have received, the income earned or not yet received, the account receivable.
b) Your sales?
Same as above.
c) Your stock?
(1) Since it is a one-man company,I do not have any stock issued yet.
(2) If the stock means inventory, since this is a business providing services only,I don’t have much inventory except for some office supplies.I would record it under a ledger account called “office supplies”.
d) Your cash?
I record them almost the way I record my sales, only this one is under a ledger account called cash; however,I also make sure I record the source of cash to make sure my accounting book is always in balance and know where the cash is coming from.
e) Your income or expense?
I record my income as I described above,#5a.But then,I record my expense under a ledger account called expense,at the same time,I will remember to debit the cash I have spent under the cash ledger account.
6.Dose your business need a trading license?
Not that I know of.
7.Where do you store your stock?
Please see my answer on #5c.I don’t have much stock to store.
8.Where do you keep your cash for safekeeping?
A safety box.
9.Do you pay income tax to the South African revenue services?
I can’t answer this question.I need to do some research. But,I guess if we make profit from any business we are doing,we should pay tax to the government.
10.Do you have a system in which you receive other income?
Not that I know of at this moment.
11.When the cost price of the sales are determined:
a) Is labor cost added to the purchasing price?
Again,I am providing service to my clients.I guess I need to add the labor cost to each service provided to them.
b) Is transport cost added
It depends on the type of services. If I don’t’ need to make house call and the translation can be done in my office,I don’t add transportation cost.If I need to go to client’s premises, such as court house, their offices, etc,I would add the transportation cost.
c) What other costs are added?
The rent,advertisement,office expenses,etc.
12.How do you calculate your selling price?
I need to find out the product cost first and then,I need to decide how much is the profit margin.
For example :
Product cost = 1,000,I want a 30% profit margin,thus to determine the selling price,I use:1,000 x 1.23= 1,300.
In this case,1,300 is my selling price for this product.
13.How do you calculate your profit or loss?
First,it is important to understand how to calculate profit. The profit equation is Total Revenue minus Total Expenses equals Profit.
14.Are you happy in your business? Why?
Yes,I am happy in my business because I understand how to calculate my profit. It would help me watch the operating budget and this would ensure I am doing my business correctly.
