Introduction
The Golden Jubilee Footbridges are the stunning multi-span cable stayed footbridges that span the river Thames in Center London,on either side of the existing Hungerford Rail-way Bridge.The two footbridges provide a direct link for pedestrians from Waterloo Station and the South Bank Arts and Entertainment Complex with Charring Cross Station and London’s West End on the North Embankment.They replace the notorious,narrow and unpleasant walkway originally cantilevering off the existing railway bridge .In the 1990’s,the Cross River Partnership –a collaboration of public and private sector bodies promotion links across the River Thames in London identified the need for improved pedestrian links at Hungerford Bridge and embarked on a design competition that attracted in excess of 40 entrant.
The contract for the construction of the winning concept design for the two new bridges was awarded to the successful Contractor under a design,build and adopt contract .The contractor’s designers were responsible for development of the design of the bridges from the original concept to production of construmental in the development of the methodology and techniques adopted for their construction,monitoring and geometric control.
The Structural Designer introduced a number of innovations and modifications to the original concept design to facilitate construction and to improve in-service structural behavior.The most notable of these changes arose early on in the construction of the foundations within the river .The need to minimize the risk from unexploded WW2 ordnance,known to have time delay fuses,from damaging and inundating the London Underground tunnels beneath the river,was Paramount.The close of proximity of the underground tunnels to proposed pylon supports adjacent to the north embankment,in this area of potential unexploded ordnance,was too prohibitive both in terms of risk and of restrictions placed on construction time and procedures .The solution adopted was to move this pylon support out of the river onto the North Embankment,resulting in a modified pylon arrangement and an increase in main span of some 15m
