A chemistry teacher was giving a lesson. Suddenly he noticed a student who was absent-minded. He asked the student, 
"What's matter?"
"Never mind!" answered the student.
"What's mind, then?"
"It doesn't matter."

可是,学生误解成了What’s the matter? (你怎么啦?),所以回答：
Never mind. (不要紧,没关系.)
老师认为学生回答得不错,因为Never mind. 可以理解成“决不是意识.”
因此,老师又问,What's mind, then? (那么,什么是意识?)
学生说：It doesn't matter. （没关系.）他本来想说It isn’t matter. （意识不是物质.）,但是不小心,说成了It doesn't matter.
通过这个对话,我们发现：matter既是名词,又是动词.matter作名词讲,意为“物质”是不可数名词.有the无the,意思差别悬殊：matter不加冠词是“物质”,加了定冠词是“麻烦,毛病,问题”的意思,相当于形容词wrong的用法.所以,在What’s the matter?中,句子的主语是What,而不是the matter, 难怪我们说I don’t know what is the matter. 而不说I don’t know what the matter is. 因为what是从句的主语,语序不变.语法原来如此精彩!
