A case that you were caught in the traffic jam

I do a LOT of long-distance driving.Twice on I-80 near the Pennsylvania-Ohio border traffic came to a complete STOP because of multiple car accidents. In one case one vehicle caught fire and the HAZMAT team had to come and clear off the toxins.Eventually the traffic was detoured off the interstate.
Both accidents happened in the mid 1990s and ever since I'm a big fan of Delorme's Gazetteers. They show you all the backroads so that you don't get lost while driving.Benchmark Maps are even better for those looking for forest trails or interesting sites along the way.I have both now while driving.
I also remember a motorcyclist on California's Route 9 near Santa Cruz lose control, fly over the cliff and smash into a redwood tree. The man didn't make it.He didn't even brake. His buddies immediately stopped and placed their bikes in such a way to honor their fallen rider. It was quite emotional even though I am not a motorcycle rider. The nearby rest stop was closed to allow the helicopter to land and take the body away.I didn't see the actual victim itself but I was stuck in that traffic for over an hour.I missed a meet-up with other hikers nearby and simply drove back home because I was so depressed after seeing everything.
The most dramatic traffic jam was on I-290 in New Jersey.A racy car had lost control and was standing UPRIGHT against the highway soundbarrier and leaning into a ditch. It was amazing to see. That car must have been driving very fast to get into that position.Sadly, the driver didn't make it.I saw the lifeling helicopter come by and take the victim away in a covered sheet. The site of that alone was pretty humbling.
Also, since I've been in at least four incidents in which traffic came to a complete stop,I've made it a habit to ALWAYS have water, snacks and a good book in my vehicle whenever I am driving.I spent the time reading whatever book I had with me.And I always make sure I make plenty of bathroom breaks...don't want to every get caught in traffic again in the middle of nowhere with no place to pee!
BTW,always carry a survivial bag with you when driving long distances. That includes a blanket, canned goods, basic tools. You never know when you may be stranded.A cell phone is a must for any traveler.
