独立结构是附着于一个主句而其自身不能独立使用的一个结构.
从外观上看,它是由名词（偶有不定代词、非人称代词）加以下6种结构之一构成：形容词、副词（非-ly型的小副词）、介词短语、不定式短语、现在分词短语、过去分词短语.
从来源上看,它是有句子“弱化”形成的.“弱化”的方法是去掉句子中的系动词be（也有人把它变成being）或助动词,以形成分词短语.
独立结构使得原来的两句话变成了一句,提高了句子的复合程度,便于表达内部关系比较复杂的意思,或者说便于揭示事物内部更为复杂的关系.有时它的前边可以放with（否定意义可以放without）,降低它的正式程度,使它变得适用性更强.
