Time was--and not so many years ago, either--when the average citizen took a pretty dim view of banks and banking. That this was so, it should be said, was to no small extent the fault of banks and bankers themselves. Banks used to be--and a few still are--forbidding structures. Behind the little barred windows were, more often than not,elderly gentlemen whose expression of friendliness reflected the size of customer's account, and nothing less than a few hundred thousand in the bank could have inspired the suggestion of a smile.

那时——也不是很多年前——普通公民对银行和银行业有模糊的认识.这个是,应该说,很大程度上是银行和银行家们自己的错.银行曾经是——现在仍然有点——令人难以接近的机构.在那些小营业窗口后面,经常是,老男人表现出的友好程度就能反映出客户的储额大小.除非数额在十万以上,不然休想得到一个微笑.
