The International Commission for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES),released new advice last week based on their estimates of 2009 Spawning Stock Biomasses (SSB) for European fish species,including those used for producing fishmeal and fish oil.The ICES advice includes a total allowable catch (TAC) which is used in setting government policies across the EU.Three fish species of particular interest to the fishmeal and fish oil are Capelin,Spring Spawning Herring and Blue Whiting.In a new move,ICES set a new recommended TAC of 390,000MT on the catch of Barents Sea Capelin for 2009 after a 5 year recommended Zero-TAC.The fishery is shared between Norway and Russia with Norway holding an average 65% allocation.This 2009 ICES advice also limits blue whiting catches below 384,000MT in order to maintain the blue whiting catch as a sustainable resource.
