WHEN it comes to solving problems,a study shows that parrots are actually quite smart.The birds can find food using clues (线索) that a human child cannot understand until the age of 3.That’s what a study carried
out on African Grey Parrots at the University of Vienna recently found,Live
Science reported.In the study,the parrots were shown two boxes.One box had food in it while the other was empty.The scientists shook thebox with food in so it made a noise.The parrots could tell that a noisy box was the one holding food.But when they mixed the boxes around and shook the empty one first,the parrot would go straight for the other box.It could
tell that no sound meant there was no food inside.The results show that parrots don’t just judge by using sight.They also use sound ” It suggests that Grey Parrots have some understanding of causality.” said scientist Christian Schloegl.One scientist tried to confuse the parrots with a small speaker hidden in his sleeve.The speaker played a recording of the shaking sound.Sometimes they would shake the box in one hand but make the sound appear from the opposite hand.The parrots would pick the correct box more often when the noise came from the hand that was shaking the box.The birds understood the link between movement and sound.Who knows what else these animals can do?
