Dear Sir:
I read with horror your story about another state's youth football team,the lying by the coaches,and the threats against the boy and his family who refused to cheat by falsifying a birth certificate.If this had been my only experience with football,I would have said,"Well,what do you expect from a game that teachers brutality and where winning is everything?"But my story is different.
It was July when a 12-year-old boy came to his father and asked if he could play football.This boy's life had not been filled with success.Allen suffered from a learning disability,and his parents hah been told he would never be able to read.Helped by some very excellent teachers and with a great deal of hard work and courage on his own part,the boy overcame this difficulty.
The father thought:Allen will not be able to play.That will cause him great pain.But he wants to try,so let him.
Practice started in August,and the father was right.The boy didn't know how to play,and he was competing with boys who had been playing the game for five or six years.But when Allen would come home from practice bruised and battered,and his father would ask,"How did things go?"Allen would answer,"Great!Coach showed me how to black today."
Finally the team had to be cut to 35 players.The coach called the father and told him Allen wasn't good enough to play,but he could issue the boy a uniform,let him dress for games,come to practice,be a part of the team,in short,do everything but play.
The father told the coach he was talking to the wrong man;he should talk to the son.
The coach did,and Allen decided to stick with the team.
The 35 played well and remained unbeaten in all the games they played.At this point the coach called the league commissioner and asked special permission for Allen to play.
Up to the day of the game,the boy didn't know he was going to play.After the pre-game prayer,the coach told the team that Allen would not only play but he would be team captain that day.The team warmly congratulated him,and then went out and won.
Their last game was the toughest of the season,and again the coach obtained special permission for Allen to play.When the action was over,and the team had won 6-0,the referee brought the game ball to the coach.The team had never awarded a game ball before.The coach asked the boys,"Who gets this ball?"With one voice,they answered,"Allen.He never gave up.He's the one who made us a team."
Both the boy and his father had tears in their eyes as they drove home with the game ball.
