The most important factor affecting the performance of listening is one's volume of vacabulary. It is not difficult to understand that when a word like thwart rather than beat appears in the news, those who have learned the word have no difficulty in grasping what the news is about while those who haven't, more often than not, have not the slightest clue of the meaning. Apart from vacabulary, a knowledge of English phonology is also important;it helps one grasp the subtle difference of meaning arising from stress,intonation,etc.
For speaking, practice makes perfect. The basic function of language is to communicate;thus to speak a language is of vital importance. The only way to be able to speak is to speak itself. Do not be afraid of making mistakes, which gives you a chance to make progress. Besides, imitation is good way to beautify your pronunciation.
Reading is important in attaining knowlege,thus special attention should be paid.Again, how many words you know basically decides how far you go. In order to read extensively, some terminology needs to be memorized with efforts.A good understanding of grammar-or more professionally, syntax-is indispensable. Some sentences may be notoriously complex so you need grammar to guide you.
Writing is about expressing yourself, so thinking is important.Without profound thinking,you still could not write a good article even with a sea of daunting words. Of course,how to express yourself is essential.Thus,you need to know how to organize your ideas and express them in a clear way.A knowlege of rhetorics also helps to impress your readers.
Translation,argubaly, is the most difficult of all. A good translator not only has a good command of both languages,but also of the culture. To translate, first you should know what the original text exactly is talking about; after this you try to re-express the ideas in another language.Even at best you will encounter some content intranslatable. In this case, some techniques of translation are neccessary,for example, how to deal with extension of meaning,etc.
