Although Jerzy had taken several courses in computer science,he couldn't solve the problems with his hard drive.
The crowd began to clap and cheer as the team entered through a cloud of smoke.
Ernesto wanted to spend the night studying,but his wife had other ideas.
为什么前两句 Although引导的句子和 as 引导的句子属于subordinate clause.
而最后一句,but引导的句子却属于independent clause?

subordinate clause 的意思是从句,即在一个句子中属于从属的部分,而不是句子的主干结构.
我们看这三个句子,第一个：Although Jerzy had taken several courses in computer science,he couldn't solve the problems with his hard drive.“尽管Jarzy学了一些计算机课,但是他却不能解决他计算机硬盘的问题.”这个句子的主干是“他不能解决计算机硬盘的问题”,而前面的从句仅是一个让步,在英语中,不是句子的主干.
第二句也是如此,句子主干是“人群开始鼓掌欢呼”,后面跟了一个as引导的时间状语从句,“当这个小组穿过烟雾进去的时候”.
而第三句,前后两个分句是转折关系,他们是平行的,没有主从之分.“Ernesto想把晚上的时候花来学习,而他的妻子有不同的意见.”
