April 1st is a day to be careful! It’s April Fool’s Day*,a day when people like to make a fool of someone else and have a good laugh at them. For example, putting food coloring in a friend’s milk,or gluing a coin to the floor and see how many people try to pick it up.
All these are small tricks which you might play on a few people. But there’s also a tradition of large companies attempting to fool a lot of people. For example,in 1996,Taco Bell (塔可钟,美国一连锁式快餐店品牌) announced it had bought the Liberty Bell (自由钟,美国费城著名古迹) and was renaming it the Taco Liberty Bell, which made thousands of angry citizens call the government to complain.
The media has also fooled many people by broadcasting reports which are untrue. In 1957,a very serious news program of the BBC reported on the poor spaghetti harvest in Switzerland, and showed pictures of farmers picking spaghetti from trees! Many people were taken in and wrote to the BBC,asking how to grow their own spaghetti. In 1962,a television station in Sweden told the viewers that, thanks to a new technology, they could turn their black-and-white TV into color TV.All they had to do was pull a nylon stocking over their TV screen.Thousands tried it!
Sometimes, even wise people get fooled. In 2008,days before the U.S.presidential election,a Canadian called vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin and convinced her that he was French President Nicolas Sarkozy.Palin failed to pick up on any of the hints that the conversation was a joke, even when he said,“From my house,I can see Belgium (比利时).”
So,read attentively and carefully through the SSP.Who knows if there’s a story just waiting to fool you?
