Cloud computing has emerged into an interesting field of researchfrom academic and industrial perspectives,a valuable asset from businessperspective and an optimal way for information access worldwide.Cloudcomputing has turned the vision of “computing utility” into a reality [1] by fulfilling the promise ofproviding computing as the fifth utility like water,gas,electricity,andtelephone.Cloud computing provides centralized computing services on demandbasis [2],and users access computingresources from centralized cloud servers through service providers.Animportant aspect of the cloud revolution is augmenting the computing potentialsof resources constraint devices through Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC).Researchers endeavor different measures to augment computing potentials ofsmart mobile devices.Sharing computation workload in application offloading isa prominent approach for augmenting computing potentials of Smart MobileDevices (SMDs).In [4],we provide thematic taxonomy fordifferent types of application offloading framework.VM migration-basedapplication offloading is among the cloud-based application processingmechanism which involves encapsulation of application in VM instance and migrationof VM to cloud server node.A challenging aspect of VM migration basedoffloading mechanism is the additional overhead associated with the deploymentand management of VM on SMD which requires additional computing resources onSMD.The deployment and management of VM involves the overhead of VM managementin different states of its lifecycle,application deployment in VM and VMmigration; which requires additional computing resources and increases theexecution cost of the application.Therefore,computing resources are consumedabundantly for longer period of time.This paper analyzes different aspects ofVM lifecycle and deployment of VM for application processing; such as VMcreation,application allocation to VM,VM destruction.We investigate the impactof VMs on the execution time of individual applications and total simulationtime in diverse experiments.VMs share the same physical computing resources ofthe computing device; therefore VM deployment for application processingrequires excessive computing resources.We analyze the overhead associated withthe deployment of VMs in application processing from diverse perspectives.Wecollect data by experimentation in simulation environment by employing a cloudsimulator known as CloudSim; which is a simulation toolkit that supports bothsystem and behavior modeling of cloud Infrastructure as a Service; such asdatacenters,VMs,applications (cloudlets) and resource provisioning policies.The paper is organized as follows.
