American Family
In the United States, the family is still very much alive, despite its many defects. The vast majority of Americans live with people to whom they are related by blood or marriage. Most American couples have two or three children,though larger families are not unusual. Typically, the family consists of parents and their unmarried children. Middle aged and elderly people generally do not live with their married children. However, parents usually keep in close
contact with their grown children and take great interest in their grandchildren. On holidays, members of the larger family group — grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins — often dine together.
Although the majority of families live in houses, many live in apartment buildings. These range in size from two to six apartments to high-rise elevator buildings that may have more than 100 apartments. Some high-rise apartments are very expensive and elegant, but many are built for moderate or even low-income families.More than 7 million Americans live in mobile homes — living quarters built with wheels. They can be moved, but generally they are brought
to a site that is intended to be more or less permanent. Then the heels are removed, and the home is fastened to the ground. Because they cost much less than conventional homes, mobile homes are especially popular among young couples and elderly retired couples.
About 87 percent of American families are headed by a married couple. We like to think of the typical American household as being closer to a democracy than to a dictatorship. Ideally, Mother and Father have an equal voice in decision-making. That is the ideal, but obviously not all households are run this way. Many families still live by the old principle that Father’s word is law. In many others, father is rarely home when the children are awake, and, as far as the children are concerned, Mother is the dominant personality and major decision-maker.
