32.0 Construction of expansion joints
.The materials given above shall be used for the following situations as detailed:
a.Between 2 roofs at the same level
Cast 200mm high x 150mm wide up-stand integrally with roof slab each side of
joint,containing water stop 75mm below top and fixing blocks on both sides at
450mm centres.After asphalting to top edge of up-stands,pin 3mm G.I.straps
40mm wide x 225mm long,with min.2 nos.galvanized nails to each fixing block.
Provide 450mm wide flashing with rolled or braxed joints along length of joint,and
fold down outer 40mm each side.Carry flashing 150mm up into parapet wall at
each end.The top surface of the flashing is to fall away from the joint.The
flashing is to be fixed to the zinc sheet strips by folding the outer edge a second
time incorporating the strip in the fold.
b.Between a roof and a vertical face
The roof side of the joint is to be identical with (a) above.The flashing need only
be 400mm wide and wall side is to be carried up 150mm,folded towards the wall,
set into a groove and fixed as specified.
c.In floors exposed to weather (access balconies,etc.,)
Cast a water stop in the floor slab throughout the length of the joint.Carry this
continuously up parapets and external walls.Provide floor joint cover along
length of floor finishes.
d.In floors not exposed to weather
Use floor joint cover only.
e.In external walls and column faces
Cast in a water stop continuously throughout the face of the building.Use a
mastic filler with its outer face recessed 13mm behind the finished surface on the
external face.
f.In internal wall faces and ceilings
Rake out joint 60mm deep and install a joint cover.
In all cases,structural elements or structural and non-structural elements on each side of
a joint shall be separated by a filler throughout the height and width of the building.
32.0 Construction of expansion joints
